When you connect to your home Wi-Fi, your router assigns your computer a “Private IP” (usually something like 192.168.1.15). However, the rest of the internet cannot see that private number.

When your computer sends a request out to a website like Netflix, your router strips away your Private IP and stamps the request with your Public IP Address. This is the unique, globally identifiable number assigned to your house by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

🌍 Why the Internet Needs Your Public IP

The Core Concept Why It Matters
Global Routing Without a public IP, Netflix wouldn’t know where to send the video data back to. It is your literal digital mailing address.
Geo-Location Websites instantly read your public IP to determine what country and city you are in. This is why you get blocked from watching UK BBC shows if your IP is in the US.
Security Tracking Server firewalls log your public IP. If you attempt to hack a server, law enforcement subpoenas your ISP to match that Public IP to your exact physical home address.

🔒 The VPN Illusion

When you turn on a Virtual Private Network (VPN), you are essentially creating an encrypted tunnel to a different server (say, in Germany).

When your internet traffic exits that German server, it is stamped with the German server’s Public IP, not yours. To a website, it looks exactly like you are sitting in a coffee shop in Berlin.

🛠️ Professional Reasons to Check Your IP

Developers and sysadmins check their Public IPs daily for several critical reasons:

  • Firewall Whitelisting: If you are trying to access a highly secure corporate server, the IT department must explicitly whitelist your specific Public IP.
  • VPN Verification: After turning on a VPN, you must check your Public IP to mathematically verify that the traffic is actually routing through the tunnel and not leaking.
  • Server Hosting: If you are running a Minecraft server or a Plex media server from your house, you must give your friends your Public IP so they can connect.
